- Katherine Cash -

KATHERINE CASH HAS BEEN A PROFESSIONAL VIOLINIST since the age of 12 and in parallel, has worked as an executive specializing in business analysis in the entertainment and financial industries since 1978.

Katherine Cash, born in Montreal, began her studies of violin when she was six, performing for the first time in public at the age of seven. While studying at the Conservatoire de Montreal, she won the string category of the Quebec National Music Competition. She completed her Bachelor's and Master's degrees at the Juilliard School in New York City where she was a scholarship student of Dorothy Delay and Joseph Fuchs. Upon graduation, Katherine was accepted onto the faculty of the University of Western Carolina as Artist-in-Residence. Katherine gave her debut in Toronto to critical acclaim. She has toured the U.S.S.R. (now Russia and Eastern Europe), the Americas, Europe and Japan, both as a performer of chamber music and as a soloist. While living in New York, she performed as concert master of the New York Symphonic Ensemble and the New York Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, in parallel with being a seated member and concert master for the Broadway Musicals "Les Miserables", "Nicolas Nicholby", "Singing in the Rain", "Dreamgirls", and "Fiddler on the Roof".

In Japan, Katherine focuses on popular Western and Asian music, reaching a wide audience through appearances on television, the internet and for live audiences, and was awarded the prestigious ‘Min-on Artist's Award' (民音芸実賞) in 1994. She has continued her love for musicals, playing concert master for the Japanese versions of "Miss Saigon", "Annie" and "Blue Stocking Ladies", as well as various Japanese musicals, and has conducted amateur performances. Katherine has toured Japan with well-known Japanese artists, such as joining the popular pianist and composer Joe Hisaishi in his Piano Trio concert tour of Japan, and records for all labels as a studio musician. Recently she has been performing as a soloist and chamber musician in recital and at events throughout Japan, and is expanding her work as Music Director for both productions and for individual artists.

In 1997, parallel with the above, Katherine founded her own company, Neurobotics, with a staff of 6 and 60+ consultants, and has also served in senior positions at international financial institutions.

- Yoichi Umeki -

Hello, everyone. My name is Yoichi Umeki and some people call me Mickey now. I am a supporter of Canada in Japan, because Canada has become a part of me though the decades. In the summer of 1981, I stood at the US side of the boarder and thought of crossing 49 Degrees North sometime in my future. Fortunately, my dream came true in the following year that I went across the Trans Canada High Way from Vancouver to Montreal.

In 84, I decided to leave Nanzan University transferring to UVic, and graduated in 1987 to come back to Tokyo in the bubble time. Eventually, I got a position with RBC and went overseas with them again in Toronto and London, where my two sons were born. My specialty was in financial derivatives, and in 97 Lehman Brothers called me back to Tokyo as the Risk Manager.

After leaving the financial industries in 2002, I set up my own consulting company called, Orion Capital Services Co Ltd, working in the venture business world dealing with various industries including real estate, education, IT, and renewable energy. Since 2008, I have consulted a company from Toronto, and now represent their business as the president of High Definition Golf Japan KK.

I am very glad that CAAJ puts us all together. And I look forward to meeting more friends of Canada in Japan.
