■Innovations in Professional Development Programs■

CAAJ is supporting the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Japan (CCCJ) in
hosting a Joint Chambers of Commerce Innovative MBA and Professional
Development Programs Seminar and Reception on March 7 at Roppongi Hills. This event
is aimed at Country Managers, Heads of HR and Professional Development
program candidates.
Following the Seminar and Q&A period, we have arranged for a
partially-sponsored post-seminar networking reception at Roppongi Hills
Club for participants.
Speakers
Jonathan DeForge and Yoshi Mitsui will introduce innovations in Global
MBA programs. HULT Business School introduced a successful new MBA
Program in Shanghai runs other programs in Boston, London, Dubai and
Silicon Valley. They will discuss the successful combination of live and
virtual programs and the utilization of leading-edge technologies to
maximize efficiency.
Dirk Binder, representative of the California State University (CSU)
system in Japan, will introduce how well-designed and implemented
Pre-MBA, Pre-CPA and other Pre-Master and preparatory programs that help
candidates quickly and efficiently enter leading MBA and Master programs
in Japan and globally.
Trond Varlid, president of EMC Quest will discuss *Business and Personal
Performance: Making Ideas Happen* and the importance of how to set,
visualize and track goals.

CAAJ Reception in Kobe on October 2, 2011

Dr. Mutsufumi Kawai receives a Certificate of Recognition from the
University of Toronto U of T) at the Canadian Alumni Association in Japan
(CAAJ) reception in Kobe on October 2, 2011.
He was awarded a Ph.D. from U of T in Biochemistry in 1972 and had a very
distinguished professional career that he completed at Eli Lilly in Kobe.

University of Toronto (U of T) alumnus Osamu "Sam" Iwao explains to the
audience about how his study experience in Canada shaped his life at the
CAAJ Reception in Kobe on October 2, 2011.
Sam was awarded with a Certificate of Recognition by U of T at the
reception. He completed his Master's degree in mechanical engineering at U
of T in 1970 and had a very distinguished career in the private sector upon
his return to Japan. He is now a budding jazz vocalist in Kobe.

RECEPTION FOR ONTARIO (AND CANADA) STUDY PROGRAM GRADUATES
The Canadian Alumni Association (CAAJ) will host a reception for graduates of short and longer-term study programs in Ontario (and Canada) on Sunday, October 2nd from 13:00 to 17:00 in Kobe.
Awards will be presented to distinguished graduates of Ontario University programs.
The reception will be supported by the Ontario Government Trade Office in Japan and the representative Robert Ulmer will attend.
There will be live Jazz and lots of good food and Ontario wine.

■ Brian Boigon at Web Directions East 2010 in Tokyo

University of Toronto Faculty Member and leading Social Media Corporate
Strategist Brian Boigon headlined a cast of all star speakers at the annual Web
Directions East (2010 version) in Nihonbashi in Tokyo on November 15th.
Boigon spoke on the background of social media, where it is going and how
corporations are making effective strategic use of it.
Other key speakers included Scott Thomas, the man who "branded" President Obama
during his successful presidential campaign in 2008, Arlene Hostrop, Executive
VP for Wunderman International and online VPs and Directors from Yahoo Japan,
Coca Cola Japan and Microsoft Japan.

Education in Canada
On Monday, May 17th, CAAJ supported a presentation by
Mike Wolfe (Headmaster) and Dugie Ross (Alumni and Fundraising Director) of
Stanstead College that was jointly hosted by the Tokai-Canada Society and the
Canadian Education Alliance in Nagoya.
Stanstead College is a leading Canadian boarding schools (grades 7-12) that is
active in Japan.
It was a very enjoyable and informative experience for everyone who attended.

Competitiveness of Canadian Boarding Schools" to a joint group of CAAJ and CCCJ
(Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Japan) members at the beautiful HSBC Akasaka
Premier Services Branch on January 19th. Michael emphasized the quality of
Canadian boarding schools, their success in preparing students for
post-secondary education at leading U.S. Ivy Schools, Canadian Universities and
top level universities around the world.

■ Duisenberg School of Finance Special Master Class in Tokyo

On December 9, 2008, CAAJ and Global Daigaku.com cooperated with the
Duisenberg School of Finance to deliver a Master Lecture on Financial Market
Reforms and the current global financial challenges at the Tokyo Hilton Hotel.
Despite the rain, the Lecture was very well attended.
Professor
Joseph McCahery, of the Duisenberg School of Finance, kicked off the evening
schedule by introducing the school and the specific and unique courses and
programmes that are offered:
- Master of Science in Financial Markets and Institutions
- LLM in Finance and Law
- Master of Science in Finance and Law
- Master of Science in Corporate Finance and Banking
- Master of Science in Risk Management
- M.Phil and Ph.D. programme in Finance
The Duisenberg School of Finance was established as a result
of a partnership arrangement between the Dutch financial sector and to
universities in the Netherlands to offer innovative and top quality education
in the core areas of finance and risk management.
Professor
Merritt Fox of Columbia School of Law then delivered an excellent overview of
Financial Systems and the current challenges they are facing. Professor Gerard
Hertig of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich presented on his
views of the current global financial challenges and provided unique insights
as to the causes.
Professor McCahery then provided some unique insights into the current
financial problems in the U.S. and EU.
After a short break, a panel discussion with our three presenters, with Q&A
with the Master Lecture attendees, was ably chaired by Professor Zenichi
Shishido of the Seiki University Law School and contributed to by Robert
Dujarric of the Institute of Contemporary Japanese Studies at Temple University
Japan.
